Homework Supervision

Homework/Literacy

Homework assistance is the first part of the program for all Stone Soup children every day. Stone Soup has made a commitment to literacy development and the children have been engaged in a number of programs committed to this goal:
  • Reading to 100 Books project
  • Reading is Fundamental program
  • Statewide contests for science, art, poetry and essays
  • Stone Soup reading centers at each site.

Stone Soup Wins Matching Grant For Reading Is Fundamental

A wonderful surprise arrived in the Stone Soup mailbox recently - a $1,200 check from GMAC for the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) program.

In this program, books are purchased at discounted rates for Stone Soup children. RIF is part of our Reading to 100 Books literacy program.

Founded 40 years ago, Reading Is Fundamental develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs. There is no cost to them or their parents for the new books.

Stone Soup seeks other donations from businesses, community organizations and private donors to match the RIF grant. When the books are delivered, kids will be able to claim a book of their choice. Three distributions a year are made at participating schools.

For many, it will be the only brand new book they've ever owned.

Teen Soupers Inspire Younger Kids to Read

Teen Soup volunteers from Lakeside Middle School are discovering the joys of mentoring Stone Soupers in kindergarten and first grade at Studebaker Elementary School.

The teens - who have shown great interest in this project - gather a small group of little ones around them to read books. Group members have a chance to ask questions, make sock puppets based on the story's characters and do art projects related to the story.

Both the sixth, seventh and eighth grade "teachers" and the younger students benefit from their time together. With the early success of the program, Stone Soup plans to expand the program by recruiting more teen mentors to help with activities such as music, dance and soccer as well as the reading activities.

Words Meet Art on Book Markers

Stone Soup students are focusing on reading in many ways this year.

The bookmark to the right says it all when it pairs reading with success.

Bookmarks, puppet shows and many other activities are helping to teach children in the Stone Soup Child Care Programs the fun of reading.
